Short answer

His parents divorced when he was six and money got tight. Kevin’s defining memory is his father, a master carpenter, losing work in the dot-com crash, missing the mortgage, and the family losing their country-club home: private school to public school, a pool house to a small apartment, the car repossessed. He says that is the origin of his refusal to carry debt, personally or at the company. As a teenager he spent about 3,000 hours in a police explorer program. 123

  • Parents divorced: Age 6 (money got tight afterward)

  • Lost the house: Dot-com crash (father a carpenter, work stopped)

  • Police explorer: ~3,000 hours (South Florida, covered by the Sun-Sentinel in 2008)

The record

Kevin’s parents divorced when he was about six, and profiles agree money was tight afterward. As a teenager in South Florida he joined a law-enforcement explorer program and logged roughly 3,000 hours of ride-alongs; the Sun-Sentinel covered the program in 2008. 13

Kevin’s account

Kevin’s account

What I remember vividly: my father, a master carpenter, could not make his monthly payments during the dot-com crash, and we lost our country club home. We went from a pool house in a beautiful country club and private school to a small apartment, public school, our car repossessed, walking to school, bouncing between my divorced parents’ apartments. That became the basis for never wanting to get into dire straits, especially with debt. Today I am debt-free, and my startup does not have a nickel of bank debt. 2

Why it is on a company site

Because it explains the company’s most unusual choice. Reinvest owns about $63 million of real estate at cost and has no mortgage on any of it. Every real estate investor is asked why they do not lever up. Kevin’s answer starts here.

In his own videos

  • September 2023, standing at the Weston Hills Country Club in Florida: the family came to Florida with nothing, lived in small apartments, and his father worked as a carpenter before building a kitchen design and installation business. 4

  • Same video, 47 seconds in: they were buying the house as his parents’ divorce began; his dad had come from Germany with a skill. 5

From the September 29, 2026 Q&A

Kevin’s account

We first moved to Naples, then lived in Aventura, Weston Hills, Plantation and Davie. 6

A kid who watched a mortgage take the house. The no-debt rule at Reinvest is that memory written into policy. 2

Simply put

✅ What happened

  • ➡️ Parents split when he was six.

  • ➡️ His dad built things for a living. When the dot-com crash hit, the work stopped and the payments stopped.

  • ➡️ They lost the house and the car and moved to small apartments.

✅ What it did

  • ➡️ He decided never to be in that spot again.

  • ➡️ He carries no personal debt. The company has no bank debt on any building.
