Short answer

Kevin Paffrath, known online as Meet Kevin, is the founder and CEO of Reinvest (House Hack, Inc.). Born January 28, 1992 in Germany (Velbert, near Düsseldorf, by his account; Wikipedia says Wuppertal), he grew up in Florida after his family moved when he was 13 months old, moved to Ventura, California at 17 with about $1,000, got a real estate license in 2010, bought a $305,000 fixer with an FHA 203k loan in 2012, became a broker, and by 2021 owned 22 properties with his wife Lauren. He started posting on YouTube full time in 2018, ran for California governor in 2021, and formed House Hack in 2022. 123

  • Born: Jan 28, 1992 (Wuppertal, Germany)

  • Licensed: 2010 (real estate, California; broker two years later)

  • First house: $305,000 (fixer-upper, FHA 203k loan, closed February 2012)

  • Properties by 2021: 22 (owned with Lauren before the company existed)

Origins

Public records give January 28, 1992, Wuppertal, Germany. The family moved to Florida when Kevin was 13 months old, first to Naples, then Aventura, Weston Hills, Plantation and Davie. His parents divorced when he was six. 1

Kevin’s account

My father, a master carpenter, could not make his monthly payments during the dot-com crash and we lost our home. We went from a pool house in a country club and private school to a small apartment, public school, our car repossessed, walking to school, bouncing between my divorced parents’ apartments. That became the basis for never wanting to get into dire straits, especially with debt. Today I am debt-free, and my startup does not have a nickel of bank debt. 3

As a teenager he wanted to be a police officer and logged about 3,000 hours in a South Florida law-enforcement explorer program, covered by the Sun-Sentinel in 2008. 1

California

He met Lauren Stewart on a 2008 school trip to Paris. The summer before senior year, at 17, he moved to Ventura with about $1,000 to live with her family and finish at Buena High School. Lauren’s parents worked in real estate. He went on to Ventura College and UCLA, graduating in 2014 in economics, accounting and political science. 12

He worked at Jamba Juice and then Red Robin, host to busboy to expediter, never server. His account of the turning point: a manager at table 10 of the Pacific View Mall Red Robin told him to be patient, and he chose real estate instead. He was licensed in 2010. 3

The first house

Kevin’s account

In the fall of 2011, with $6,500 to my name and Lauren with about $6,500 saved, I started writing offers with a pre-approval. Everyone was warning about a double-dip recession. I took the opposite view: if everybody is dogging on real estate, now must be the time to buy. I got a deal in February 2012, a complete fixer-upper for $305,000 with an FHA 203k renovation loan. We moved in August 2012. 3

Commissions went from over $35,000 in his first year to over $500,000 in 2015, without a team, by his account. He became a broker two years after licensing, branded as the No-Pressure Agent, and was a top-three agent in Ventura County by 2015. By May 2021 he and Lauren owned 22 properties. 123

The rest

A construction branch he funded with about $1 million in 2017 lost over $300,000 and closed in 2018. YouTube, which he had used since 2010 to show clients how he worked, became the job in 2018. He ran for governor in 2021, formed House Hack in June 2022, launched an ETF that November and closed it in 2025 to focus on the company, and renamed the company Reinvest in September 2025. Each of those has its own page.

Real estate license was achieved in 2010 and broker in 2012. 5

A kid who lost the family house in the dot-com crash, arrived in California with $1,000, and built a real estate business before the YouTube channel made him famous. The no-debt rule comes from the first part of that story. 13
